e-Governance

A Classification Society is a partner in the network of Organizations responsible for setting up and monitoring safety standards of ships. It is an independent, non-commercial, and self-regulating body that establishes and applies published Rules to verify the design, construction and operation of ships and off-shore structures. Class has an obligation to the Insurance industry, Flag States, Port States, Charterers, the financial sector, the ship-owner, and the public, to be independent and impartial in the application of its expertise.

The principal work of the Classification Society is to undertake Surveys to ensure that the Rules, which it has developed, are applied to new buildings and existing ships to ensure their safety. The Rules cover hull structures, safety equipment, cargo-handling gear, engine, machinery, and other systems.

A Classification Society does not design, build, own, operate, manage, maintain, repair, finance, insure or charter ships. A Classification Society may also be recognized by a Flag State to carry out Ship Security verification and International Ship Security verification on its behalf.

There are about fifty organizations world-wide providing marine Classification services. Classification is a system of safe-guarding life, property, and the environment at sea that is based on the understanding that a ship is loaded, operated and maintained in a proper manner. Teledata is developing e-Governance solutions which will cover all the above aspects of a Classification Society’s activities.
